Lot 2940
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.90 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate. Irregular mint, after 327. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTVS [A]VGG / ARL Campgate with open doors and four turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 291 (for prototype). Somewhat smoothed and with traces of overstriking, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This coin imitates Arles RIC VII 291 and subsequent issues. It was overstruck on an official coin, and on the neck of the overtype, one can discern the downward-facing profile of Constantine I. The reverse displays the letters NC from the original legend above the camp gate. The undertype may therefore be a VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP coin, though other possibilities exist.
